Now, Mom and Dad have actually been using "The 'F' Word" for years to describe what we see. And we don't want you to accept our words just "because we said so!" So here’s an explanation we think makes sense.

 

A government may not decide to become fascist at a precise moment; rather, fascism takes hold through many acts, none of which may sound all the alarms, but each of which is itself alarming. The time is now to ring out the most critical warning from every bell tower in every state and town in our nation.

 

Here are the sinister symptoms of fascism:

• Intention to destroy democracy and eliminate all dissent.

• Nationalism replaces patriotism.

• Racism. Blame minorities for national ills.

• Anti-immigration. If racism against nationals doesn’t suffice, blame those from abroad.

• Sexism. Women are subjugated; choices limited, actions controlled.

• Theocracy. The separation of church and state erodes.

• Militarism. Separation of civilian government and military erodes. Military used for domestic law-enforcement.

• Control of mass media. Delegitimization of free press.

• Propaganda replaces history; indoctrination replaces education.

• Delegitimization of elections and other democratic institutions.

• Deference to or alliance with other authoritarian regimes.

• Disregard for civil rights, human rights.

• Corporate powers protected.

• Consolidation of wealth in fewer hands.

• Denial that truth is real.
